Multiply a Whole Number by a Power of Ten

Discover the magic of adding zeros when multiplying by 10, 100, 1000 and more!

The Power of Ten

Multiplying by powers of ten is one of the coolest math tricks you'll learn!
When you multiply a whole number by 10, 100, 1000, or other powers of ten, you're simply moving the digits to the left and adding zeros at the end. The number gets bigger, but the digits stay the same - they just shift places!

How It Works

1️⃣ Count the zeros in the power of ten (10 has 1 zero, 100 has 2 zeros, etc.)

2️⃣ Add that many zeros to the end of your whole number

3️⃣ Celebrate! You've just mastered a super useful math skill 🎉

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Money makes it real: Use dollar bills ($1, $10, $100) to show how multiplying by 10 changes the value from dollars to tens to hundreds.
  • Play place value games: Write numbers on index cards and have your child physically add zeros when multiplying by powers of ten.
  • Connect to real life: Show how this skill is used in measurements (meters to centimeters) or population counts to make it meaningful.
