Area of Squares and Rectangles

Discover how to measure space inside shapes!

What is Area?

Area tells us how much space is inside a shape.
Imagine you're painting a wall or laying tiles on a floor - the area tells you how much paint or how many tiles you'll need!

How to Find Area

1️⃣ For rectangles: Multiply length × width

2️⃣ For squares: Multiply side × side (since all sides are equal!)

3️⃣ Remember: Area is always in square units (cm², m², etc.)

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Rectangle

A rectangle has:

Length = 5 cm

Width = 3 cm

Area = 5 cm × 3 cm = 15 cm²

Example 2: Square

A square has:

Side = 4 m

Area = 4 m × 4 m = 16 m²

Try It Yourself!

Calculate the area of a:

Area = 1 × 1 = 1

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Real-world practice: Measure rooms in your house together and calculate their areas. Compare sizes!
  • Visual learning: Use graph paper to draw shapes and count the squares inside to understand area concepts.
  • Game idea: Play "Area Detective" - give your child the area of a shape and have them figure out possible length and width combinations.
