What Are Mixed Numbers?
Mixed numbers are numbers that have both whole numbers and
fractions!
They look like this: 3½ or 5¾. The whole number part tells us how many complete things we have, and the
fraction part tells us how much extra we have beyond that.
How to Round Mixed Numbers
1️⃣ Look at the fraction part of your mixed number
2️⃣ Compare it to ½ (which is the same as 0.5)
3️⃣ Round up if the fraction is ½ or greater
4️⃣ Round down if the fraction is less than ½
Let's Practice Rounding!
Example 1: Round \(2\frac{3}{5}\) to the nearest whole number
First, let's see what \(\frac{3}{5}\) looks like on a number line:
Since \(\frac{3}{5}\) (which is 0.6) is greater than \(\frac{1}{2}\), we round up to 3!
Example 2: Round \(4\frac{1}{4}\) to the nearest whole number
Let's think about where \(\frac{1}{4}\) falls:
Since \(\frac{1}{4}\) (which is 0.25) is less than \(\frac{1}{2}\), we round down to 4!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen fractions: When cooking, ask your child to round measurements like "1¾ cups" to the nearest whole number.
- Visual aids: Use pie charts or fraction circles to help visualize whether a fraction is more or less than half.
- Real-world practice: Point out mixed numbers in daily life (like gas prices or measurements) and practice rounding them together.
