Understanding Decimal Number Lines
Decimal number lines help us see exactly where numbers with tenths,
hundredths, and thousandths belong!
Just like regular number lines show whole numbers, decimal number lines show all the numbers in between.
They help us compare decimals and understand how big or small they are relative to each other.
How to Read a Decimal Number Line
1️⃣ Look at the scale - Check if the line shows tenths (0.1), hundredths (0.01), or thousandths (0.001)
2️⃣ Find the whole numbers - These are usually marked with longer lines (like 0, 1, 2)
3️⃣ Count the smaller marks - Each small line represents a fraction of the whole number
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Place 2.7 on the number line
Drag the red dot to where you think 2.7 should be:
Example 2: What decimal is at the dot?

Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Use measuring tapes or rulers to show decimal numbers in everyday objects.
- Decimal hopscotch: Draw a giant number line with chalk and have your child jump to different decimal points.
- Compare decimals: Ask questions like "Is 0.45 closer to 0.4 or 0.5?" to build number sense.
