What Are Fractions of Numbers?
Fractions help us understand parts of whole numbers.
When we find a fraction of a number, we're dividing that number into equal parts and then counting how many of those parts we want. It's like sharing a pizza with friends - if you have 8 slices and want 3/4 of the pizza, you're figuring out how many slices that would be!
How to Find Fractions of Numbers
1️⃣ Divide the whole number by the denominator (bottom number)
2️⃣ Multiply the result by the numerator (top number)
3️⃣ That's your answer! You've found the fraction of the number
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Sharing Ice Cream
You have 12 scoops of ice cream. You want to eat 2/3 of them. How many scoops is that?
1. Divide 12 by 3 (denominator): 12 ÷ 3 = 4 scoops per part
2. Multiply by 2 (numerator): 4 × 2 = 8 scoops
Answer: You can eat 8 scoops of ice cream!
Example 2: Reading Challenge
There are 36 pages in your book. You read 5/9 of the book. How many pages have you read?
1. Divide 36 by 9 (denominator): 36 ÷ 9 = 4 pages per part
2. Multiply by 5 (numerator): 4 × 5 = 20 pages
Answer: You've read 20 pages of your book!
