Understanding Fractions on Number Lines
Number lines help us see exactly where fractions belong!
Just like whole numbers can be placed on a number line, fractions fit between them. A number line from 0 to 1 is perfect for showing fractions like \(\frac{1}{2}\), \(\frac{3}{4}\), or \(\frac{2}{5}\).
How to Graph Fractions on a Number Line
1️⃣ Divide the line into equal parts based on the denominator
2️⃣ Count the parts based on the numerator
3️⃣ Mark the spot where your fraction belongs
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Place \(\frac{3}{4}\) on the number line
See how \(\frac{3}{4}\) is three parts out of four? That's why it's here, closer to 1 than to 0!
Example 2: Compare \(\frac{2}{3}\) and \(\frac{3}{5}\)
Try dragging the points! Which fraction is larger? You can see \(\frac{2}{3}\) is further to the right, so it's bigger!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen fractions: Use measuring cups to show how \(\frac{1}{2}\) cup is more than \(\frac{1}{3}\) cup - then draw the number line together!
- Sidewalk chalk math: Draw giant number lines outside and have your child jump to different fractions.
- Fraction hopscotch: Create a hopscotch grid with fractions instead of numbers to combine physical activity with learning.
