What is Division?
Division is about sharing equally!
When we divide, we're splitting a larger number into equal smaller groups. For example, if you have 12 cookies and want to share them equally with 3 friends, you'd divide 12 by 3 to give each person 4 cookies.
How to Divide 2-digit Numbers by 1-digit Numbers
1️⃣ Divide: How many times does the divisor fit into the first digit?
2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your answer
3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract from the dividend and bring down the next digit
4️⃣ Repeat: Continue until there's nothing left to bring down
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Sharing Apples
Emma has 36 apples and wants to pack them equally into 4 baskets. How many apples go in each basket?
1. 4 goes into 3 zero times, so we look at 36
2. 4 × 9 = 36
3. 36 - 36 = 0
Answer: 9 apples per basket!
Example 2: Sports Teams
There are 52 students who want to play soccer. The coach wants to make teams of 4 players each. How many teams can be formed?
1. 4 goes into 5 one time (4 × 1 = 4)
2. Subtract: 5 - 4 = 1, bring down the 2 to make 12
3. 4 goes into 12 three times (4 × 3 = 12)
4. 12 - 12 = 0
Answer: 13 teams!
