Understanding Number Sentences
Number sentences are like math puzzles!
Sometimes equations have missing numbers that we need to find. Whether it's addition or subtraction, we can use what we know about numbers to complete the sentence and make it true.
How to Find Missing Numbers
1️⃣ Look at the equation carefully - is it addition (+) or subtraction (-)?
2️⃣ Think about what number would make both sides equal
3️⃣ Check your answer by putting it back in the equation
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Hungry Panda
Panda ate 7 bamboo shoots in the morning and some more in the afternoon. Altogether he ate 15 shoots. How many did he eat in the afternoon?
7 + = 15
Example 2: Soccer Ball Collection
Jamal had some soccer balls. He gave 4 to his friend. Now he has 9 left. How many did he have at first?
- 4 = 9
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Have your child use coins, buttons, or toys to physically represent the numbers in the equations.
- Think aloud: Encourage your child to explain their thinking process as they solve each problem.
- Create word problems: Make up simple stories using your child's interests (sports, animals, etc.) to practice these skills in context.
