What Are Input/Output Tables?
Input/output tables are like number machines!
They show us how numbers change when we put them through a special rule. The "input" is the number we start with, and the "output" is what comes out after the rule is applied. Your job is to figure out the secret rule!
How to Find the Rule
1️⃣ Look at the first pair - What happens to the input to make the output?
2️⃣ Check other pairs - Does the same rule work for them too?
3️⃣ Test your rule - Try it on a new number to see if it works!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Adding Machine
Input | Output |
---|---|
3 | 8 |
5 | 10 |
7 | 12 |
10 | 15 |
What's the rule? The output is the input plus:
Example 2: The Doubling Machine
Input | Output |
---|---|
4 | 8 |
6 | 12 |
9 | 18 |
12 | 24 |
What's the rule? The output is the input times:
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it real: Create input/output tables with everyday items ("If we put in 3 apples, we get 6 apple slices. What's the rule?")
- Start simple: Begin with addition/subtraction rules before moving to multiplication.
- Play detective: Frame it as solving a mystery to make it more engaging for your child.
