Perimeter

Measuring the distance around shapes is fun and useful!

What is Perimeter?

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape!
Just like when you walk around your backyard, the perimeter is how far you've walked to go all the way around. We measure perimeter in units like centimeters, inches, or feet.

How to Find Perimeter

1️⃣ Identify the shape (rectangle, square, triangle, etc.)

2️⃣ Measure all the sides with a ruler or count the units

3️⃣ Add up all the sides to find the total distance around

Let's Practice with Shapes!

Square with 4 sides of 5 cm each

Rectangle: 6cm, 4cm, 6cm, 4cm

Triangle with sides 3cm, 4cm, 5cm

Real World Example: Fencing a Garden

Imagine you have a rectangular garden that is 8 meters long and 5 meters wide. How much fencing do you need to go all around it?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Measure real objects: Use a measuring tape to find the perimeter of tables, books, or your child's bedroom.
  • Sidewalk chalk math: Draw shapes outside and have your child walk around them while counting steps to understand perimeter.
  • Baking activity: When making square or rectangular cookies, calculate the perimeter of the dough before cutting.
