What Are Doubles?
Doubles are when we have two of the same number!
When we subtract doubles, we're taking away the same number from itself. This makes the answer always zero! Isn't that neat?
How to Subtract Doubles
1️⃣ Find two of the same number (like 5 - 5)
2️⃣ Take away the second number from the first
3️⃣ You'll always get zero as the answer!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Cookie Sharing
Emma has 8 cookies. She gives 8 cookies to her brother. How many cookies does Emma have left?
Equation: 8 - 8 = ?
That's right! 8 - 8 = 0. Emma has no cookies left because she shared them all!
Example 2: Balloon Pop
There were 6 balloons at the party. All 6 balloons popped! How many balloons are left?
Equation: 6 - 6 = ?
Great job! 6 - 6 = 0. All the balloons popped, so there are none left!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects like toys or snacks to demonstrate subtracting doubles - "If you have 4 crackers and eat all 4, how many are left?"
- Make it a game by having your child hop twice the same number and then subtract - "Hop 3 times, then hop 3 more times. Now subtract the second 3 hops from the first!"
- Point out real-life examples: "We had 2 slices of pizza and ate both. 2 - 2 = 0 slices left!"
