What Are Mixed Operations?
Mixed operations means doing different math problems together!
Sometimes we add numbers, sometimes we subtract, and sometimes we do both in the same problem. Today we'll practice switching between adding and subtracting like math superheroes!
How To Solve Mixed Problems
1️⃣ Look carefully at each problem
2️⃣ Is it adding (+) or subtracting (-)?
3️⃣ Solve it step by step!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Cookie Jar
Mom baked 8 cookies. You ate 2 cookies, then she baked 3 more. How many cookies are there now?
First: 8 cookies - 2 eaten = 6 cookies
Then: 6 cookies + 3 new = 9 cookies total!
Great job! That's subtraction AND addition together!
Example 2: Toy Cars
You have 5 toy cars. Your friend gives you 4 more, but then you share 2 with your sister. How many do you have now?
First: 5 cars + 4 new = 9 cars
Then: 9 cars - 2 shared = 7 cars left!
Wow! You did addition first, then subtraction - perfect!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects like buttons or toys to act out mixed operation problems - it makes the math more concrete!
- Highlight the operation signs with different colors (+ in green, - in red) to help your child notice them.
- Make it a game - create story problems about their favorite toys or snacks to keep them engaged.
